It's reasonable to crate them when they'll be sleeping, e.g. at night when you're asleep, and at times during the day if necessary (if you're out for an hour or two and need to leave them home by themselves, for instance). Puppies need much more frequent potty breaks, about every 3-4 hours, which means, yes, middle of the night walks until they're able to hold it through the night.
